Further Lines back to Scotland

From Robert Hanna we have

John Hanna (b abt 1570 in Scotland)
It looks like this is where the name Hannay comes into play. It was most likely changed as the family immigrated to the America.
Alexander Hannay (b abt 1533 Sorbie Castle, Wigtown Scotland)
     Wife: Anne Mackie
Donald Hannay
Patrick Hannay
John Hannay
Alexander Hannay
Patrick Hannay (b about 1404)

So this information is pretty loose and take it for what it's worth. I have not validated any of it myself so this is purely relying on the research of others. It'll take some time for me to be able to validate it myself so as you can tell, this is a huge work in progress. I hope to one day tell you that I've been successful!!

I have found a website that verifies the information I have listed above and takes the record back even further (to 1250). Of course I have no idea how to verify that information and will start when I have time. But for your further amusement, I'll share the link. Click here.

Jonas Hanna

Jonas Hanna

We'll start with Jonas Hanna (1), born May 8th 1789 in the area now known as Monroe County, Pennsylvania.  He died in April of 1865 and is buried in the Coolbaugh Cemetery/Middle Smithfield burying ground.   Before the creation of Monroe county in April of 1836 parts of it were known as Upper, Middle and Lower Smithfield. This individual is my husband's 5th great grandfather.

Here is a link to a picture of Mary and Jonas's tombstone. This is also a very interesting find because on it is written that the original name was "Hanna" and that there was a feud between two men named Hanna and ordered one family to add the "s" to the end of Hanna - creating the "Hannas" family.

Here's a quick rundown of how we get to my husband
Jonas Hanna (1) (1789 - 1865)
John Hanna (2) (1813 - 1896)
Albert Hanna (3) (1842 - )
Irvin Hanna (4) (1880 - 1940)
Gilbert Hanna (5) (1916 - 1984)
(6) (Living)
(7) (Living)

One a side note - Monroe County is also where a line on my mother's family line lived, the Stroud family. So I am sure that they knew each other seeing how sparsely populated the areas were back then.

There is a Jonas Hanna listed as a Justice of the Peace in Middle Smithfield, PA in August 1823.

Jonas Hanna married Mary Barbara Mann. She was born 1789-1873.

The 1840 tax lists in Monroe County have Jonas as paying his property taxes.  His son Charles and John are also listed as property owners in Monroe County.

On the 1860 Federal Census, Jonas is listed as living with his wife Mary and his daughter Elizabeth (b. 1811).  Jonas lists himself as a farmer with a property value of $3500 and a personal estate value of $500. It is recorded that Jonas and Mary are buried in the Coolbaugh Cemetery but I have yet to confirm this record.

Children of Jonas and Mary:

Elizabeth - born 7 Sept 1810
Carl - b. 7 Aug 1811
Charles b 11 Jul 1812
     Married - Sarah Alice Finger
John (2) b 2 Nov 1813

Welcome!

I am going to start a blog of the information that I have gathered. I hope that those who read who are interested in sharing any details that they have may come forward. I'm looking for stories about these people, places that they lived, things they accomplished! Anything! I may have dates wrong but I will try to do my best at getting the information as accurate as possible.

With that being said, please enjoy!
